Earl Approaches Saybrook
7:31 a.m. Old Saybrook is under a Tropical Storm Warning today as Hurricane Earl continues its march up the eastern coast of the US. The category 2 storm is currently passing very close to North Carolina's Outer Banks and then expected to impact Southeastern Connecticut by the evening and into the overnight hours. Heavy rainfall, generally between 1 to 3 inches with locally higher amounts, and winds gusting up to 40 mph can be expected along the New England Coast beginning Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. Transit District Receives Grant for Hybrid Vehicles The Connecticut Department of Transportation has announced that 9 Town Transit (9TT), a service of the Estuary Transit District, is a recipient of a 2010 Connecticut Clean Fuel program grant. The hybrid buses that 9TT intends to buy will be the first light-duty hybrid buses in the state, making 9TT one of only a handful of transit districts in the country with such vehicles. Read More ...

Southeast Shuttle Bus Service Launched from Old Saybrook to New London 9 Town Transit now provides direct service to between Old Saybrook and New London with its new Southeast Shuttle. This service replaces the current Niantic route that terminates in Niantic. The Southeast Shuttle operates Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. between the Old Saybrook Train Station and the New London Transportation Center in downtown New London, via Old Lyme. Lomme Wins Probate Primary Terrance Lomme, an Essex lawyer, won the Democratic nomination for judge of probate in the new nine-town area district Tuesday, defeating challenger Raymond Rigat of Clinton by about 550 votes. Lomme, 62, had captured the party endorsement over a field of six candidates at the nominating convention in May. Rigat, who has served as judge of probare in Clinton since 1998, was the convention runner-up. "The Kate” Forms Guild for Theater Volunteers The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center has formed a Guild for its volunteers that serve the theater as ushers, parkers, box office personnel, boutique volunteers, receptionists, and theater docents. 9 Town Transit Continues Free Bus Fares for Seniors The Estuary Transit District’s 9 Town Transit is continuing its popular free senior bus fares with some changes to simplify the program. The free fares are valid on all 9 Town Transit services for travel throughout the Estuary region. Any resident of the nine town Estuary region (Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook) age 60 or older qualifies for the program. Read More ...
